The "Children's Choir of Orenburg" will
be singing Divine Liturgy in our Russian Orthodox Church of Three Saints
on Sunday, October 13.
The group of 7 girls and 6 boys are just
13 of 50 orphans who were adopted by a remarkable Russian Orthodox priest
and his wife.
Some quick background. In 1990, Very Rev. Nikolai
Stremsky was appointed to a dilapidated church in the remote Orenburg region
or Russia. Over the following 12 years the energetic priest adopted
as his own children 50 orphans; completely rebuilt the church; founded
a free school for his own and other area children; started an old age home
and a lay service group to help them. His religious community also
includes a bakery and sewing factory which provides this expansive family
and extended community with free clothing and food.
Having found, among this large family, a number of very
talented singers, Fr. Nikolai organized a children's chorus. Their repertoire
includes a variety of Russian folk and spiritual music.
Fr. Nikolai will be happy to answer all your questions
and share his experience after Divine Liturgy. Russian - English interpretation
will be provided if necessary. It's your second chance to be
involved in this amazing story. He was here in May 2001 but at that
time it was not very successful. Now they have a horrible financial
situation, close to bankruptcy, and that is why Fr. Stremsky risks coming
to New York and New Jersey hoping to get some help from American Orthodox Christians.
